Google’s Nexus devices will never be competitors to the iPhone of Samsung Galaxy series but for some they’re the obvious choice when looking for a new phone. Usually reasonably priced, well built and fairly powerful would be enough to please most. It’s the fact they run a purer version of Android than just about any other phone and that updates come to Nexus devices first that really set them apart from most phones and yesterday Google revealed the successor to the popular Nexus 5 known as the Nexus 5x and like its predecessor built by LG.
One of the key things about Nexus devices is the software so it should come as no surprise that the 5X comes with Android 6.0 Marshmellow installed, an update some other phones won’t get for months and many won’t get at all. You get a 5.2-inch, 1920 x 1080 display powered by a 1.8 Ghz hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor with an Adreno 418 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Internal storage is either 16GB or 32GB and with no microSD card slot you may find yourself relying on cloud storage after a while.
The rear of the device features a fingerprint scanner below a 12.3 megapixel camera with a 5 megapixel camera on the front of the phone. There’s a 2,700 mAh battery and fast charging is supported so 10 minutes of charging can get you nearly 4 hours of use. The device is visually pretty similar to the original Nexus 5 which isn’t a bad thing and it comes in three colours, Carbon (black), Quartz (a shade of blue) and Ice (white). The Nexus 5X also uses USB Type-C rather than micro USB, something which is sure to become the new standard within a year or two.
While it can’t be considered a competitor to most flagship device as it generally has a different audience the Nexus 5X is a solid device, especially since the 16GB version will cost £339.
